Cette célèbre forêt, dont le nom est étroitement associé à la légende de Robin des bois, est le lieu où se dresse le légendaire Major Oak, qui d'après le folklore local, était la principale cachette de Robin des Bois. L'ancien chêne serait âgé de 800 à 1000 ans, et, depuis l'ère victorienne, ses branches massives sont supportées par un système de tuteurs pour éviter qu'elles ne se cassent.

The tree a Quercus Robus or pedunculate oak oak is situated within the heart of the 450 acre Sherwood Forest, Nottingham.
It is the biggest oak tree Britain. It is 16 meters high- a girth of 10 metres a spread of 28 metres and it weighs 23 tons. It is estimated to be between 800-1000 years old.
Its first recorded name was the Cockpen tree a reference to when it was used as a cockrel pen to hold birds before a cockfight.It was given its current name after it was described in 1790 by historian Major Hayman Rooke
