Metz (which is pronounced "mess") is a beautiful city at night, too - illuminated buildings, lights reflected on the water. Passing through the Moselle Gardens - which were a little mysterious at night - we saw a sign for the Dancing Fountains of Swan Lake, a spectacle that had just ended two days before our arrival. Another reason we have to return to Metz. Metz's Saint-Étienne Cathedral is considered one of the most beautiful Gothic monuments in France. Created by joining two churches in the 13th century, the cathedral is enormous: its 41-meter (135-foot) vaulted nave is the third highest in France, and Mutte Tower houses an 11-ton bell. With 6,500 square meters (70,000 square feet) of stained glass, the cathedral has the largest surface in France. The quality and diversity are as impressive as the quantity: some of the 122 windows are from the 13th century, while others were designed by Modernist Marc Chagall and Surrealist Jean Cocteau in the 50s and 60s. Thanks to these beautiful rows of windows, Saint-Étienne Cathedral is nicknamed God's Lantern and Metz is called Stained Glass City.
Metz is a very colorful city. It's green, with its parks and gardens, and its urban ecology policies. It's blue, with kilometers of canals and rivers. And it offers lots of other colors, thanks to its prize-winning flowers* everywhere. It's a perfect spot for people who like to stroll along embankments and who enjoy cities with natural settings.
